This is the Black Bear, its scientific name is Ursus americanus. It can run faster than 25 mph and climb trees like a squirrel. They have an extremely adaptable behavior, such as hibernating in the winter. Their lifespan is an average of 10 years, however some may live up to 30 years in the wild. Black bears usually mate during the summer having 1-6 cubs in a litter (normally 2). Cubs usually stay with their mother for a year and a half or more.

This is the Opossum , its scientific name is Didelphimorphia, shown on the right. Opossums are the only marsupial in North America , meaning 'pouched animal' to hold its young. Opossums have opposable thumbs on their rear feet and can also grasp things with their tails. When opossum feel in danger they "play dead" , which is a coma-like state where opossum become stiff, and have low shallow breathing. Most predators give up the attack thinking the opossum is actually dead.

This is a Tawny Owl, its scientific name is Strix aluco. The Tawny owl is nocturnal, so it does most of its hunting at night. Silently it waits for an animal, so it can bare down upon it covering it with its wings and powerful claws. Tawny Owls usually pair up and look for nest in Autumn. The Tawny Owl's lifespan is 4-6 years, butt the longest one of the owls ever lived was 18 years.

This is the Whitetail Deer, its scientific name is Odocoileus virginianus. It is extremely cautious and has well developed sense of smell, sight, and hearing. If seriously frightened, or it senses danger, it will quickly run away raising its tail upwards. That's where the name "Whitetail Deer" comes in. The deer has a white tail which it waves in the air warning others nearby of danger as if it were a flag. When the Whitetail Deer is born, it is almost completely senseless. As it grows older, it develops its senses better.

Salamanders, its scientific name is Caudata, live in the Forest Floor. Young salamanders breathe using gills, while adult salamanders use lungs or breathe through the skin. Most salamanders are carnivores. They feed on insects, worms, and similar prey. Some species use their tongues to catch the prey. Salamanders' predators include fish, snakes, and birds.

This is the Giant Panda, its scientific name Ailuropoda melanoleuca (Eye-luhr-oh-poh-da Mel-ah-no-loo-kah), lives in some parts of the Deciduous Forest. It is one of the most recognizable animals of extinction. The Giant Panda must eat from 26 to 84 pounds of food each day. A baby panda's size is about 1/900th of its mother. However it can grow up to 330 pounds as an adult. In the last few years, the Panda population grew nearly 17%.

This is the Eastern Cottontail Rabbit, its scientific name is Sylvilagus floridanus. They require more water in the winter than in the summer. They do this by eating snow. There are many types of Cottontail Rabbits, but the Eastern Cottontail is the most common. It usually weighs from about 28 to 54 ounces (800-1533 g) and its size is from 39.5 cm to 47.7 cm (15.5-18.75 in.)

This is the Chipmunk. Its cheek pouches can stretch up to the size of their head. A chipmunk can carry 9 large nuts at a time, four in each cheek and one between its teeth! Its scientific name is Tamias and there are many different types of chipmunks throughout all North American forest. Chipmunks have an omnivorous diet.

This is the European Hedgehog, its scientific name is Erinaceus europaeus. It will eat almost anything it catches. European Hedgehogs hibernate , which usually begins during November and ends around Easter (April). However Hedgehogs wake up several times during the Winter to build a new nest. Commonly mistaken, a Hedgehog is not related to a porcupine, but rather shrews or moles.

This is the Northern Copperhead Snake, its scientific name is Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen. This snake, has a coloration that resembles the color of fallen leaves and twigs which is excellent camouflage from its predators or when hiding to catch its prey. Baby copperheads though, up to a year or so in age, have a bright yellow tail which makes them easily identified as a worm or grub, however most, do not see the well hidden snake attached to it.

The animals adapt to the climate by hibernating in the winter and living off the land in the other three seasons. The animals have adapted to the land by trying the plants in the forest to see if they are good to eat for a good supply of food. Also the trees provide shelter for them. Animal use the trees for food and a water sources. Most of the animals are camouflaged to look like the ground.
